Moldova - Encounter Culture Country Spotlight

Travel the World: Moldova

moldova

moldovaOur featured country this month is Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova. It is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe situated between Ukraine and Romania, and very close to the Black Sea.  It is considered a parliamentary republic with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. The climate is moderate winters and warm summers.

One of AAG’s very own Outreach Coordinators Mariana is from Moldova and had this to say:

Moldova is a small and relatively unknown country in Eastern Europe. Sandwiched between two of its more recognized neighbors, Romania and Ukraine, Moldova was formed in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union. Famous throughout Europe for its delicious wines, food and hardworking people. While not known to most of the world, Moldovans, such as myself, take a lot of pride in being from such a small, mysterious country. We value family, independence and hard work and we always welcome visitors with open arms. To me, this is what it means to be Moldovan.

Argentina - Encounter Culture Country Spotlight

Argentina: In Union and Liberty

AAG wants to not only promote cultural exchange through our programs, but also provide an opportunity to travel the world virtually. Our goal is to give you the opportunity to learn more about a featured country with whom we are establishing and creating stronger business, political and human ties. This month we are featuring Argentina.

Argentina Argentina, officially the Argentine Republic, is located in southeastern South America and is considered the largest Spanish speaking country in Latin America. Because of the country’s long length, it is divided into four main regions: subtropical woodlands, heavily wooded slopes of the Andes, semiarid and cold Patagonian Plateau and temperate region near Buenos Aires. If you travel there you must try mate, a traditional Argentine herbal drink, prepared in a hollow-out gourd which is lovingly passed around and shared with friends and family.

Probably the most well-known expression of Argentine culture is the tango- a combination of Latin dance and music. It’s true that you will still see street Tangeros perform in the heart of Buenos Aries.

Argentina is also famous for their excellent leather products, Malbec wine, earthy cuisine and mouthwatering beef. You can sample all of this at a typical Argentine restaurant, where you should try chorizos (sausage) or mollejas (sweetbread) with chimichurri, a sauce of chopped parsley, dried oregano, garlic, salt, pepper, onion and a splash of olive oil and paprika. Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is a country in South America and the 5th largest country in Latin America. Peru is a representative democratic republic divided in 25 regions. Its geography varies from the arid plains of the Pacific coast to the peaks of the Andes Mountains and the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin. Peru has three main climatic zones; tropical jungle, arid coastal deserts and mountain highlands.

If you travel to Peru, you must take time to visit one of the most familiar icons of the Inca ancient civilization, Machu Picchu also known as the “Lost City of the Incas.” The Incas built the estate around 1450, but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. It is known for its breath taking views, Inca architecture, and sacred temples and fountains.

Peru is also recognized for outstanding handcrafted textiles and art form in mediums such as gourds, wood, stone, gold, silver and pottery. Peruvian cuisine is an expression of multiple cultures co-existing in one territory. Check out some Peruvian recipes here
