philippinesAAG wants to not only promote cultural exchange through our programs, but also provide an opportunity to travel the world…virtually.  Our goal is to give you the opportunity to learn more about a featured country with whom we are establishing and creating a stronger business, political, and human ties. This month we would like to feature the Philippines.

In recent years, AAG has personally assisted hundreds of Filipino students and young professional by providing opportunities for them in the United States on the Summer Work Travel, Intern, and Trainee J-1 Visa Programs.

The Philippines are made up of more than 7,100 islands which are spread over 116,000 square miles – a bit more territory than Arizona – between the far western Pacific and the South China Sea.  Worldwide it ranks 12th in population and is considered a growing country. The country has a variety of terrain from sand beaches, to active volcanic mountains. Because of the geographical location, the Philippines have a tropical rainforest climate throughout the entire country.  The temperature hovers around 78 Fahrenheit or 26 Celsius.  Manila is the capital city, a massive clamorous metropolis that covers 636 square kilometers and is home to almost 10 million people. An interesting fact of Manila is that it hosts the oldest Chinatown in the world, Binodno which was established in 1594.

PhilippinesIf you travel to the Philippines you must try riding the most popular means of public transportation: a Jeepney. They are known for their crowded seating and flamboyant decorations, which have become an iconic symbol of the Philippine culture and art.

You should also try Halo Halo, a very popular Filipino dessert. It is a mixture of shaved ice and evaporated milk with various sweet beans and fruits served in a tall glass or bowl. It is especially refreshing on a warm tropical day.

Take a glimpse of the Tinikling, a traditional dance of the Filipino culture:

The motto is Maka-Diyos, Maka-Tao, Makakalikasan at Makabansa which means For God, People, Nature and Nation.

The Philippines, officially known as the Republic of the Philippines, is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean..
