My Favorite Thing in America Is...

Favorite Thing in America

AAG’s support services team hosts a quarterly in-country participant contest. This is a great way to learn more about our international participants’ stories while in the United States.  We hope you enjoy reading some of our favorite contest entries below. The contest closes on June 15th at 11:59 pm. The top finalists will be shared on AAG’s Facebook Page; the Grand Prize Winner and First Runner Up will be announced on June 16th. Please encourage your international participants to share their story with us!

We asked our participants what their favorite thing in America is…here are a couple of responses:

“I love the snow in America!  It was a bright, sunny and beautiful day. I departed the green lustrous island of Jamaica and arrived in the United States of America, not for the first time but the first time experiencing the winter season. “Oh how freezing cold.” I came to realize this was a love-hate relationship, this weather and I. When I saw the source of my shivers I was captivated by its beauty and fell immediately in love. As J.B Priestley says “The first fall of snow is not only an event it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment, where is it to be found.” Snow, as is with Christmas brings people together while time stands still. In order to appreciate the beauty of the snow I had to learn to withstand the cold. When I finally could, these white particles floating in the air, piling in a fluffy white bed was by far the most amazing sight I have ever seen. I was used to leaving footprints in the sand now I have a whole new experience of leaving footprints in the snow. Oh how I love this snow! By far my most favorite thing in America is the snow.”

“As what you’ve see in the picture, my favorite place so far for almost 7 months that i stayed here is the BARCLAYS CENTER watching the game of New York Brooklyn Nets vs Suns Magic, i considered this as my greatest experienced ever because i am a diehard fun of NBA and a diehard fun of Brooklyn Nets, imagine, before I’m just watching them on television via satellite and now i already experienced watched it live, what a dream come true, i didn’t mind the cost of the ticket since it is just a once in a lifetime opportunity i never hesitate to grab this chance and also this is my advanced gift to myself for my birthday. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much guys for letting and giving me chance to enter this kind of program, you’re all God’s instrument of granting, reaching and making the dreams come true…once again THANK YOU SO MUCH…GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS”

“This might sound silly, but I love that everything in America is so affordable! Everything that I could never afford back home, I can buy over here! I don’t know how ill adjust with the price difference back at home. Hahaha. I know that if you convert the dollar back to rand, technically you’re paying about more or less the same price, but I’m not earning in rands anymore. Its dollars. I love America. Winter too has passed. I started skiing for the first time too. It was amazing. I have so many awesome videos. If I could attach them, I would.

“What I love about America is the people and the culture. Having the chance to step on the land of America made me understand that all people in the world are equal. Regardless of the color, race, state of living that you used to or the beliefs that you were practicing since childhood are well respected. America is such a lovely place because it will accept you who you are. America taught me to understand and to let myself enter the different dimensions of the world has to offer and to let other people enter to the life I have. And yes, GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Home Country: Philippines
Teach Program: Colorado River Union High School District

“My favorite thing so far is the car that I got. I named my car Kayla and the reason why she is my favorite is because I am able to go to places and events to experience the different cultures, places, sights, and people here in the US that would have been inaccessible to me previously. An example of such was when I went to Flagstaff, AZ and saw the beautiful scenery. It was literally like living inside a postcard. I’m planning to go back there with my colleagues and visit the Grand Canyon, Monument, Valley, and Four Corners, among other things. Seeing the Native American culture, and getting to know some of them is also something that I can’t get enough of. I just love meeting new people and getting to know about the history surrounding them.”
